Expolitio

Refining the same idea by restating it in varied forms.

Expolitio — Latin for 'polishing' — is the rhetorical figure of dwelling on a single idea by expressing it several times in different words, from different angles, or with different examples. The point is not to add new information but to burnish the point until the audience has felt its shape from more than one side. Roman rhetorical handbooks list expolitio as one of the standard devices for expanding a passage without padding.

The figure differs from mere repetition. Simple repetition uses the same words; expolitio uses different ones for the same substance, so that each restatement adds a new facet — a synonym, a metaphor, a contrast, a supporting instance. Done well, it feels like a subject being turned over in the hands; done poorly, it feels like a writer who has said the thing once and does not know how to stop.

It is closely related to commoratio, which lingers on a single point by returning to it, and to accumulatio, which piles up related terms; expolitio sits between the two, refining the same claim rather than heaping up variants of it. The classical formula in the Rhetorica ad Herennium is that the same thought is developed by change of words, change of form, change of treatment, and inclusion of an example.

Common mistake: mistaking expolitio for elegant variation. The variation must serve emphasis, not disguise repetition. If a reader can cut three of the restatements without losing anything, expolitio has slid into padding.

Example
The wise man is free even in chains; no tyrant can imprison him; his mind moves where it wills; the body's captivity cannot reach his thought.
After Seneca · One idea — that the philosopher's freedom is interior — is turned four times, each restatement adding an image without adding an argument.
