Podcast Clip Quotation

Short audio or captioned video excerpts that turn spoken conversation into circulated quotation.

Podcast clips are 30- to 90-second excerpts cut from long-form audio or video conversations and distributed with burned-in captions. They are now the dominant way in which spoken remarks enter general circulation, replacing the newspaper soundbite.

The form has a specific distortion. Long-form conversation is exploratory: speakers qualify, reverse, and think aloud. A clip captures the most assertive thirty seconds and discards the hedging that followed, so speakers routinely appear more certain in clips than in the conversation they came from.

Verification practice adapts easily. A responsible clip cites the show, episode number and timestamp, which lets any listener hear the surrounding minutes. A clip with no episode reference should be treated as unsourced regardless of how convincing the audio sounds.

The rise of convincing synthetic audio makes the timestamp habit more important, not less: a checkable pointer to the original recording is now the main defence against fabricated speech.

Example
“Cited well: The Ezra Klein Show, ep. 412, 47:20-48:05.”
— citation practice for audio · Show, episode and timestamp make a spoken quotation as checkable as a page reference.
