Hashtag Quote
A quotation formatted or repurposed for social media hashtags.
A hashtag quote is a quotation that has been shortened, tagged, or reframed to travel through social media platforms. It may be a single line, a screenshot, or a video clip, always accompanied by hashtags that sort it into conversations and trends.
The hashtag changes the nature of the quotation. It turns a sentence into a movement marker (#BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo), a marketing label (#JustDoIt), or an ironic frame (#MondayMotivation). The quotation becomes less about the original speaker and more about the community using it.
Hashtag quotes spread faster than traditional quotations because they are easy to copy, share, and remix. They also decay faster: once a hashtag stops trending, the quotation attached to it often sinks out of view.
Common mistake: treating a hashtag quote as a stable text. The wording, attribution, and meaning can all shift as the hashtag travels.
